Introducing Virtuoso Lite, bringing a streamlined version of Virtuoso 2.0 with all the top features for accurate binaural monitoring.
14th March 2025 - Based at the University of Huddersfield in the UK, Applied Psychoacoustics Laboratory (APL) was founded in 2013 by Professor Hyunkook Lee, a renowned spatial audio and psychoacoustic engineering expert. The mission was to push the boundaries of sound technology, focusing on the intersection of psychoacoustics and immersive audio and delivering high-quality audio experiences to everyone's daily lives.

After releasing the popular sequel to the first Virtuoso in October 2024, today, APL is excited to introduce Virtuoso Lite, a streamlined edition of its flagship Virtuoso binaural monitoring tool, praised by many top sound engineers for its accurate and natural-sounding speaker and room virtualization.
Designed to make high-quality immersive monitoring more accessible, Virtuoso Lite delivers essential features for accurate binaural rendering while maintaining the core excellence of APL’s technology.
Virtuoso Lite will be available to buy from the 14th March 2025, with the standalone app costing $75.00 and the Lite Plugin costing $99, and can be purchased from apl-hud.com.

About Virtuoso
Powered by ASPEN™ technology, APL Virtuoso brings immersive audio mixing and listening to headphones, offering customisable virtual listening rooms that mimic real environments. Virtuoso delivers accurate externalisation and localisation of sound, ensuring mix decisions translate well to loudspeakers. The software also provides superb tonal naturalness, simulating the experience of listening to premium loudspeakers in a perfectly tuned room, while reducing headphone fatigue.
Key features of the full version of Virtuoso include support for 53 speaker configurations (from mono to Dolby Atmos and Auro-3D), seven virtual room presets, fully customizable acoustic settings, and built-in and custom HRTF sets and headtracking. The software currently provides EQ compensation for 100 headphone models, with 10-band parametric EQ for user customization, ensuring a personalized, high-fidelity listening experience across any setup.
HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) settings in Virtuoso are crucial for creating a natural and immersive listening experience. HRTF is a filter that models how an individual's ears, head, and torso affect the way sound reaches the eardrum from different directions. Users can either use one of the five presets built into Virtuoso, or upload their personalised settings for an even more realistic adjustment.
By adjusting HRTF and virtual room acoustic settings, Virtuoso accurately simulates how sound would naturally be perceived in a physical space, providing realistic spatial cues. This allows listeners to experience audio that feels externalized, as if coming from around them, rather than from within their headphones. This precise spatial representation is key to reducing ear fatigue and delivering a highly authentic and natural listening environment.
Virtuoso Partnership Program: Enhancing Remote QC of ADM
With the introduction of ADM/WAV playback in Virtuoso v2, sound engineers now have a powerful tool for quality control (QC)—a feature highly welcomed by professionals. As more QC workflows move to remote environments, clients often lack access to full Dolby Atmos speaker systems or compatible software to play ADM files. Binaural playback is the most effective solution for accurate QC in such cases.
To support this shift, APL is launching the Virtuoso Partnership Program, designed to enhance remote QC workflows by equipping qualified professional engineers with up to 5 free licenses of the Virtuoso Lite Standalone app, which can be shared with their clients.
When purchasing the full version of Virtuoso, partners will receive these free licenses. Their clients then play the original ADM file on Virtuoso, virtually checking how the mix is translated in different loudspeaker configurations and different playback environments, such as living room and home cinema as well as the engineer's mix room.
By enabling clients to experience immersive mixes more accurately through Virtuoso Lite, engineers can ensure their work is faithfully represented. To find out more about the Virtuoso Partnership, visit this link to APL's website.
For the Pros
For professional users, APL Virtuoso Lite provides a game-changing tool for mixing and monitoring audio in a variety of environments. Its realistic virtual loudspeaker setups, with new interactive GUI, allows engineers to make precise mix decisions on headphones with a new level of accuracy and spatial localization. The software's highly accurate translation to real loudspeakers ensures consistency across listening environments, while its extensive features offer maximum control. This makes Virtuoso Lite ideal for professionals who demand precision and flexibility in their workflow, whether they are working in the studio or remotely.
For Audiophiles and Music Lovers
APL Virtuoso Lite offers audiophiles and music lovers an immersive, high-fidelity listening experience, allowing users to enjoy music as if they were in a professional studio or live concert venue.
With its ability to create realistic virtual listening rooms, Virtuoso Lite provides superb tonal accuracy and precise spatial representation, placing the audio source outside of the head as though listening to real speakers. This leads to a more natural and engaging experience, with reduced listening fatigue for longer, more comfortable sessions. The headphone compensation EQ feature also ensures that each user can enjoy perfectly tuned audio, tailored to their specific setup, enhancing both clarity and immersion.
The Virtuoso is a better, cheaper solution than having a full Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Any headphones can be turned into an immersive acoustically treated listening room.
Find out why the pros trust it...
Bob Katz, a world-renowned mastering and mixing engineer, emphasizes Virtuoso's effectiveness in professional settings. He said, "I thought I was listening to my speakers! Virtuoso fooled me. Amazing creation. We finally have a translation tool that allows mixing with headphones." Further adding, "Using Virtuoso, I got a sense of height and rear localization which is far better than other binaural systems I have tried."
Virtuoso's ability to provide accurate audio spatialization, ensures that mixes created on headphones translate seamlessly to loudspeakers. This is essential for professionals who need to deliver high-quality audio across various platforms.
Hans-Martin Buff, the winner of the 2025 Grammy for Best Immersive Audio Album for Peter Gabriel's i/o (In-Side Mix) and Prince, called Virtuoso "a game-changer for my binaural adventures" emphasizing its reliability and portability whether in a studio or on the road.
With the release of APL Virtuoso Lite audio professionals and enthusiasts alike can look forward to an immersive listening experience with the essential features that made the Virtuoso 2.0 stand out.
Whether used for critical mixing decisions or simply enjoying music, Virtuoso's advanced tech continues to transform our connection with sound. The Virtuoso Lite reinforces APL's commitment to innovation in audio, delivering exceptional sound quality to a diverse audience, from top professionals to passionate music lovers in a more compact but still feature-rich edition.
